NIBONG TEBAL: Attempts to escape from a stray dog proved to be a painful experience to a man and three children when they fell into a drain.
In the 7pm incident at Taman Seri Bayu here today, Samsul Yahaya, 31, his two daughters and a niece were injured when they fell into a drain after being chased by a stray dog near their house.
Samsul suffered a broken right shoulder while his one-year-old daughter Nur Qasrinasyasha Samsul suffered injuries on her face and arms.
Speaking to reporters today, Samsul's mother Latifah Embi said she heard a loud sound outside her house and at first thought it was an accident.
However, she got the shock of her life when she saw that her son and her three grandchildren were the victims in the incident.
"I didn't know what to do when I saw my son in that drain. I dragged the grandchildren and brought them into the house first.
"Then I asked my other son to call Samsul's wife for help," she told theSun.
Samsul is being treated at a private hospital and requires an operation for his broken shoulder.
Earlier Jawi assemblyman Soon Lip Chee in a press conference said he took the matter seriously and urged Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) to take action to stop stray dogs roaming around freely in residential areas.
"I am aware that there are a lot of stray dogs in this area, so I hope MPSP can do something so this incident won't happen again," he said.
Meanwhile, a resident of the same residential area, Syahrin Mat Daud, 43, also expressed his concern about stray dogs in the housing area and hopes something can be done by the authorities.
"I have been living in this area for eight years now; this problem keeps occurring and the stray dog population seems to be increasing every year.
"I hope the authorities can take action so in the future the incident involving the family will not happen to others again," he told theSun.
