SMK Convent Green Lane needs more funds

GEORGE TOWN: SMK Convent Green Lane needs more funds to build a new two-storey building.

Its building committee chairman Dr Manjit Kaur said the school needs another RM400, 000 for the construction of the new building which is to be completed in approximately ten months provided they have sufficient funds.

"We have already raised RM1.4 million over four years through school activities and fund raising (initiatives).

"We need another RM400,000 to complete the construction and we will raise more funds to furnish the new block", she said during a press conference after a technical visit by Penang Youth and Sports, Women, Family, and Community Development Committee chairman Chong Eng and Batu Lanchang assemblymen Danny Law Heng Kiang here today.

The new block will house four classrooms, an art room, a language lab, a meeting room, an examination preparation room, a printing room and offices for senior staff.

At the same press conference, Chong Eng handed the school a sum of RM50,000 from the state government as a means to assist the school in its building project.

"Under the institutional allocation system,the state government has given out RM360,000 in total to the school since 2009", she said.

Chong Eng also urged all schools to ensure the funds given by the state government is spent wisely and said the allocation should be considered as a supplement sum to the budget already given by the federal government.

Law also pledged to donate RM20,000 to the schools from his constituency budget.

"It is a small part from us to help the school", he said.

The school currently has 1,001 students, 66 teaching staff and nine support personnel.
SMK Convent Green Lane is also the alma mater of Malaysian Squash queen Datuk Nicol David.
