Tun M: PAS' hudud is unfair and 'unIslamic'

KUALA LUMPUR: The Hudud pushed by PAS to be implemented is "unislamic", says former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He said that PAS' hudud is not Islamic as it is not fair, while the Quran seeks for justice while punishing.
"Cutting off limbs, stoning to death and decapitation against Muslim and carrying out lighter sentences against non-Muslims in the same community is very unfair. Hence, PAS' hudud is not Islamic hudud," he said this in his blog, chedet.cc, today.
He pointed out that it (hudud) was being pushed by PAS based on political interest.
On March 19, Kelantan state assembly passed the Syariah Criminal Code II 1993 (Amendment 2015) unanimously, with BN assemblymen supporting the motion by the PAS-led state government.
"I am shocked to hear that Kelantan Umno supports PAS' hudud. I hope they understand what they are doing," Mahathir said.
He also pointed out that PAS' current move to implement hudud was political as PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang had in his prime message in 2003, during the 11th General Elections, said that PAS will not include the issue of Islamic state and implementing Hudud and Syariah at the federal level, as it was the downfall of the then Barisan Alternatif.
"The Provision on Islam is sufficient, as what has been enshrined in the Federal Constitution and as practised today at the federal level," Hadi Awang was quoted saying.
Mahathir added that in Malaysia, the existing syarak law is limited to Muslim family disputes, and does not persecute Muslims and non-Muslims.
"For other crimes, the current Malaysian laws do not discriminate religion in order to be fair of all," he added.
"To do something for a benefit which tarnishes the Islam image is something that does not conform to the Islamic teaching, and deters the non-Muslims from the holy teaching of the religion," he said.
