Indonesia may execute 10 death-row inmates this month

JAKARTA: The Indonesian government may execute 10 mostly drug convicts late this month, the attorney general's office said Friday.
"Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the executions will hopefully be carried out this month after the Asia-Africa Conference," attorney general's spokesman Tony Spontana said.
The Asia-Africa Conference runs from April 19-23.
This month a Jakarta court threw out an appeal filed by Australians Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, two of the 10 drug prisoners facing imminent execution, challenging President Joko Widodo's refusal to grant them clemency.
The Australians have lodged a judicial review in another attempt to avoid the firing squad, but Spontana said it would have no bearing on their execution because they have exhausted all legal avenues.
The Australian government and supporters of the men have urged Indonesia to stop the executions, saying they have been fully rehabilitated.
The other eight drug offenders facing execution from other cases are three from Nigeria and one each from France, the Philippines, Indonesia, Brazil and Ghana.
Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo has said they will be executed at the same time.
The French drug convict, Serge Atlaoui, still has his case review appeal pending. – dpa
