KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pix) said he does not blame Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak for not building the crooked bridge project in Johor.
"I don't advocate the removal of the Prime Minister because he is too afraid of Singapore to build the crooked bridge."
"I am sympathetic towards him because he is very weak so he cannot build the bridge brick by brick," Mahathir said.
"When you lose money and cannot explain where the money is, I think you are not competent to become a prime minister," Mahathir said during a press conference after launching the Kuala Lumpur Foundation to Criminalise War international forum at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC).
Recently, Mahathir has been critical of Najib on his blog (chedet.cc), over various issues such as the controversial 1Malaysia Development Board (1MDB), Crooked Bridge and 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M).
Mahathir said it was not wrong to ask questions if it involved people's money.
Answering to Mahathir's criticism, Najib had gone on local television recently to clear the air, where he had said that two issues, the crooked bridge and 1 Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M), could have been part of the reasons why Dr Mahathir was relentless in his criticism.
When asked by journalists on whether Mahathir's disagreement with Najib could split Umno, Mahathir said a competent leader must lead the party to continue its reign in the general elections
"We are faced with two choises, either you remove a prime minister who has failed and who will lead to Umno losing the next election, or you take your chance that if he goes off we may be able to revive Umno," Mahathir said.
