PETALING JAYA: A legal team of five lawyers from Gerakan today attended a court hearing on a case filed on March 19 to challenge the constitutionality of the Syariah Criminal Code II Enactment 1993 (Amendment 2015).
Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong said in a statement that the move made in the hope of finding a permanent solution to the hudud issue.
"I have been informed that the court has made a decision to adjourn the matter to May 7 and we respect that," he said.
"Our legal team is well prepared and we have a strong locus standi in mounting a legal challenge against the constitutionality of hudud. It is our fervent hope to seek a permanent solution to this (issue)," he added.
Mah said the legal team was led by Gerakan deputy Youth chief Andy Yong and comprised four other Gerakan lawyers, including B. Jayanthi Devi, Ong Siang Liang, Chai Ko Ting and Raymond Leong.
He added that legal team has the support of the central committee to undertake the task, and that it is a show of solidarity by the multiracial party in defending the integrity of the Federal Constitution.
