GEORGE TOWN: The Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi today donated a total of RM60,000 to 12 welfare organisations including those caring for the aged, cancer patients and emotionally distressed.
Its president, Datuk Seri Khoo Keat Siew, said that each organisation received RM5,000.
"We are confident they will make good use of the money in these trying times," he said at the presentation ceremony.
The receipients included the Befrienders Penang, Penang Home for Infirm and Aged, Pure Lotus Hospice of Compassion, Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital, Silver Jubilee Home for the Aged and The Cerebral Palsy (Spastic) Children's Association of Penang.
Khoo Kongsi, one of the largest clan association in the state, was established by early settlers from Xiamen, Southern China, in the 19th Century to look after their clansmen financially and also to preserve culture.
"This charitable function is an example of its awareness of its social responsibilities to the less fortunate," he said.
