Pak Lah: Conduct studies first before issuing fatwa

PETALING JAYA: The mufti or parties that make fatwas should emphasise and focus on four main aspects before issuing a ruling or fatwa.
Chairman of the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (MIDF) and former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (pix) said that those aspects are mastering the Al-Quran, using the right methods in issuing the law, understanding the climate that influenced new issues and applying the laws from the original source.
“Issuing a contemporary fatwa, especially those related to technical fields must be conducted with proper studies before it is issued,” he said in his speech before officiating the round table discussion entitled "Strengthening the Fatwa Institution: Facing the challenges as a source of Syariah in Malaysia", here today.
Abdullah added that the institution of fatwa is important in conveying the true understanding of Islam to Muslims, especially when it comes to the rules of Islam.
He also explained that a mufti’s role was more than just issuing a fatwa, he explained that a mufti has to consult with experts to understand the pressing issues in society.
Abdullah added that of late many questions have been raised which needed immediate answers to ensure the Muslim community could safeguard their religious integrity.
“People become confused with the various opinions laid out. This is where the mufti comes in, to provide the answers.”
