KUALA LUMPUR: Ops Warta, the traffic police operation to trace and detain traffic summons defaulters, is just days away from a fresh launch to serve close to 1.6 million arrest warrants on defiant motorists.
Federal traffic police chief SAC Datuk Mohd Fuad Abdul Latiff said today that Ops Warta or Operasi Waran Tangkap will be launched soon to compel those who have chosen to ignore their traffic summonses to pay up outstanding fines.
He did not reveal the launch date but said it would be before the middle of next month.
Mohd Fuad said of 4,092,706 arrest warrants issued to traffic summons defaulters, 2,496,197, or 61%, have been served to motorists.
"In the fresh operation, we intend to serve the remaining 39%. In the past, Ops Warta was confined to police roadblocks but in the upcoming operation we will go knocking on the doors of these offenders." he said at a press conference in Bukit Aman today.
Mohd Fuad also revealed road accident statistics for the first quarter of the year which showed a rise in the index such as fatalities and the total road crashes.
Comparing the latest statistic with that of the first quarter of 2014, Mohd Fuad said 1,696 people perished between January and March this year, a rise of 73 deaths.
Mohd Fuad said 63.3% of those killed were motorcyclists and their pillion riders, followed by motorists and pedestrians at 19.4% and 7.7% respectively.
He said total road accidents for the period stood at 117,934 which is 3,819 cases above last year's figures.
However, he said cases of serious injuries declined to 985 cases compared to 1, 069 recorded last year.
Police also issued 880,914 summonses during the period of which about 10% were for offences related to the use of the emergency lane, double line overtaking and jumping queue.
