KOTA KINABALU: The number of workplace accidents in Malaysia has declined by 37% within an 11-year period from 56,249 in 2003 to 35,309 last year.
National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the decline was a good development and it was hoped that it would continue to persist.
"The decline in the number of workplace accidents is the result of the commitment and joint efforts between the government, employers and workers to achieve the goal of zero accident in workplace," he told reporters after launching the 2015 health campaign organised by NIOSH and Sabah Sports Board here today.
On commuting accidents, Lee said based on the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) statistics, the number of such cases had increased from 17,609 cases in 2004 to 28,050 last year.
He said all quarters must come together to develop a culture of preventing accidents particularly in workplace. – Bernama
