LABUAN: Five houses and a fish factory were razed by a fire last night, making 17 people homeless in Kg Sg Keling here. The fire broke out several minutes before 11pm, as most of the victims were resting and about to sleep.
No casualties were reported in the late night incident. Labuan fire and rescue station head, Jason Bilin said three engines with 24 firemen rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 11.02pm.
He said the houses were completely gutted, except for the factory which was only partly destroyed. The department was investigating the cause of the fire and losses incurred.
"We managed to put out the blaze after half an hour and control the fire from spreading. Only 10% of the factory was destroyed," he said.
"It happened so fast and in less than five minutes, the houses were engulfed. I don't think the victims had time to salvage anything. All the victims were left with only the clothes on their back," said a witness. – Bernama
