New girl in town

SHE is fun, she is candid, and she is 8TV Quickie's newest host – Timur Gabriel. It's difficult to put this girl out of your mind because in addition to her unique name, she also has this charm that pulls you in as she talks. And this is probably why the latest addition to the Quickie family was picked out of many other applicants.
"My co-host, Mark O'Dea, and I have been friends for years and when he found out that they were looking for someone new, he was pushing me to try out for it.
Initially I was a bit anxious because I've never done any entertainment work before but I agreed, brought my résumé for the audition and everything went quite smoothly from there," the 21-year-old explained.
What's one of the perks of your job?
I didn't have to line up for events (laughs). The line was very long and I was standing in the queue when someone recognised me and told me that I can go right in. It was my first celebrity treatment so it was nice.
Where do you get your fashion inspiration from?
I like to be comfortable and I would prefer to dress classy more often but I'm too laidback. In terms of celebrities, my style is a combination of Vanessa Hudgens, Harry Styles and Victoria Beckham. I know Harry is a boy but I do like his style.
What is your definition of beautiful?
People are too concerned about being beautiful these days. They are constantly redefining the word beauty so everyone can be beautiful but not everyone is. If you're not attractive and your character is complete rubbish then you're not beautiful at all. To me, I think that people should stop obsessing over the idea of beauty and stop trying so hard to achieve beauty because it doesn't matter all that much. The more you make it important, the more you're going to change the meaning until it suits you and I think that adaptation is bad. The need to be beautiful is so unhealthy.

You exude confidence and this is something rare among many young girls who battle self-esteem issues. Where do you get this confidence from?
It took a lot of growing up to be confident. I was always confident but in a bad way where people would say I'm arrogant. I lost a lot of friends and don't get along well with people. However, as I got older I realised that it's important to just be yourself. This is kind of cliché but true, and being yourself means not conforming to what other people want of you – not expect from you but what they want from you. And if you want to be confident, you need to know what is right and to do the right thing.
What is your take on the selfie obsession?
I think it has a lot to do with the confidence complex. I mean I do it all the time and if you're honest you would admit that getting compliments and lots of likes for your picture is a huge objective, a main one I'd say. One can argue and say that people take selfie because they're feeling confident, but if you really are then why do you need affirmation from others about something that you already know yourself? I see this as a self-esteem issue and the obsession is unhealthy. I don't condone it but I still do it so you see where the problem is. I won't go as far as to say that we need to stop it, but just don't fuel it.
