PETALING JAYA: Another team comprising of six volunteers, medical officers and doctors from the Malaysian Medical Relief Society (Mercy Malaysia) has been deployed to Kathmandu, Nepal, to assist with the search and rescue mission for earthquake survivors as well as providing humanitarian aid to the victims.
Mercy Malaysia communication officer Zaheera Harun told theSun that the humanitarian intervention priorities for the team will likely be on the search and rescue of survivors from the massive earthquake that rocked the city last Saturday.
"Given the type of terrain in the country, it is crucial to extend the areas of the search and rescues mission to rural areas outside of Kathmandu as quickly as we can with the hope of finding more survivors.
"At the same time, the team will also be bringing with them all the necessary relief items such as health and surgery equipment, safe drinking water, hygiene kits, plastic sheets, blanket, generators, mobile storage units and communication equipment," she said when contacted today.
Asked how long the team will be there, she said they have yet to determine the period but what is certain is that it will be for at least one week.
"Our main focus area will be within the vicinity of Kathmandu with other areas and the duration of stay has yet to be decided as it depends on the needs there," she added.
