JOHOR BARU: A man is believed to have died of smoke inhalation when he was trapped on the top floor of his double-storey terrace house here when fire broke out today.
Lee Yoo On, 50, who worked as a driver in Singapore, could not escape because of the intensity of the blaze but his 22-year-old daughter and 19-year-old son managed to escape from the window on the second floor with the help of neighbours.
His wife, Chiang Lee Ying, had left the house at 7am to go to the market.
Johor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director Mohd Rizal Buang said the Tebrau fire and rescue station received a distress call at 7.17am and firemen in two fire engines rushed to the house at Jalan Rumbia, Taman Daya, immediately.
Mohd Rizal said the victim died because of the smoke from the fire. His body was removed by the firemen.
Lee had just arrived home at 3am that day from work.
Initial investigations revealed the fire started from the joss sticks on the altar which were in the centre of the guest room.
