Candidates limber up before Rompin by-election

    ROMPIN: About 53,000 voters will go to the polls tomorrow to pick the winner in the by-election that follows the death of incumbent Tan Sri Dr. Jamaluddin Mohd Jarjis in a helicopter crash on Apr 4.
    Barisan Nasional (BN) is betting on former Pahang Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Hasan Arifin, 62 while his opponent is PAS youth chief Nazri Ahmad, 40.
    BN deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had been campaigning hard in Rompin along with Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, who is also the state BN chairman.
    On the PAS side, Pahang state commissioner Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has been leading the party's campaigning.

    PAS relied on national issues like the newly implemented Goods and Services Tax(GST) and plight of second generation Felda selters, ecpecially their housing needs, to rally voters.
    Barisan Nasional went for close rapport with voters employing casual activities such as house-to-house visits, friendly gatherings, people's games and movies.
    Rompin is a Barisan stronghold held by the late Jamaluddin since 1990.
    Jamaluddin defeated former PAS women's wing chief Nuridah Mohd Salleh with a majority of 15,114 vote in the 2013 general election.
    Rompin covers a large area totaling 5,390 sq km, comprising three state seats, Bukit Ibam, Muadzam Shah and Tioman.
