KOTA BARU: Two snatch thieves got more than they bargain for and one of them almost lost an ear after being overpowered by members of the public yesterday.
District police chief ACP Rohaimi Md Isa said in the incident at Kampung Tanjung Chat around 7pm, the two suspects robbed a 50-year-old woman of her handbag as she was approaching the front gate of her house.
He said the victim's son and a relative who saw the incident rushed to her aid but were held back by one of the suspects who hit them with a piece of wood.
"The suspects fled on a motorcycle they had left at the side of the road.
"But about an hour later, the duo were accosted by members of the public about 200m from the scene," he told reporters at the Kota Baru police contingent headquarters here today.
Rohaimi said one suspect was seriously injured on his left ear and cheek and currently being treated at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II while the other was slightly injured and had been detained to facilitate investigations.
"Investigations revealed both suspects in their 30s, from Tumpat, have a previous conviction record for drugs and causing hurt," he said, adding that the duo had used a stolen motorcycle in the robbery.
He said police were still looking for the handbag believed to contain RM1,000, a bank book and valuable items. – Bernama
