ROMPIN: Claims that the Rompin by-election result would be the indicator of public acceptance towards the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is "irrelevant", said Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Hasan Arifin.
Hasan disavowed the claim made by Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek.
"When did he (Hasan Malek) said it? That statement is 'stupid'," Hasan told reporters at the Felda Keratong 4 Semai Bakti hall ground-breaking ceremony here.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin also disagree with the statement made by the KPDNKK minister.
Muhyiddin said the Rompin by-election could not be the platform to judge public acceptance on GST.
"I don't want to be too eager to make such claims, that is a wrong interpretation. There are a lot of other factors that would contribute to the election result," Muhyiddin said.
He added he is aware that many are still dissatisfied with the government move to implement the new tax system.
"I can talk about the benefit GST, but many would disagree with me and I understand their plight," Muhyiddin said.
