Letters - Decentralise education
"SUPPORT for English as medium of instruction" (News Without Borders, May 11) refers.
Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, the ruler of Johor, made it clear he wants English language medium schools. There is nothing about strengthening the English language and making a pass in the language compulsory.
The sultan's call should be implemented as a respect to the royal institution. If the federal government finds it a "difficult decision"; it's the right time to decentralise the education system.
As a first step, the former Straits Settlements – Penang and Malacca – Sabah and Sarawak should revert to English medium schools.
The Sultan has made the right order to his subjects. He wants to see a world-class society on par with Singapore; his subjects to be world-class students and citizens who can stand and be counted in the international arena of thinkers. We have the resources but what is lacking is the political will.
Thank you Tuanku for your foresight.
