SHAH ALAM: The crime rate index in Shah Alam has remarkably dropped in the first four months for this year, compared to the corresponding period last year.
Shah Alam police chief ACP Azisman Alias told a press conference today the crime index here showed a reduction of 22.6% from January to April compared to the same period last year.
However, he said he was still not satisfied if the community here still had the feeling of insecurity.
"We will work for more engagement with the community not just in the community policing programme," he said after launching a community policing involving Shah Alam police headquarters with Auto Prima College.
He said the decrease in the crime index is also due to the initiative called Stop, Walk and Talk (SWAT) programme conducted by the personnel normally on their patrolling duty.
"The police personnel will spend 15 minutes everyday when patrolling to stop their car and talk to the people on the streets to ask if they are okay or need help. This programme was implemented since last year" he added.
He also revealed that vehicle theft contributed many cases in the police records.
"One reason is because Shah Alam has many higher learning institutions and most of the students use motorcycles," he added.
He said snatch theft recorded a drop of 45% from January to April, this year, compared to the same period last year.
On the community policing programme with Auto Prima College, he said this is one way for the police to engage with youths so that "they can be our friends in combating crime."
