Fire at Press Metal's smelting plant

    PETALING JAYA: A smelting plant owned by Press Metal Bhd's 80%-subsidiary Press Metal Bintulu Sdn Bhd caught fire last Sunday in Samalaju Industrial Park, Bintulu, Sarawak.
    In a filing with the stock exchange, Press Metal said it is unable to ascertain the cause of fire or estimate the full impact and consequences of the incident.
    "The incident did not cause any harm to persons or any known uncontrolled emissions," it noted.
    Press Metal Bintulu is engaged in the manufacturing of aluminium products.
    Press Metal said the the preliminary estimate of the impact on the earnings of the group is not expected to be substantial and will also be mitigated as it is adequately insured.
    Press Metal's other subsidiary in Sarawak, namely Press Metal Sarawak Sdn Bhd remains in full operation and the construction of the Phase 3 aluminium smelter located next to the Samalaju Industrial Park with an expected annual production capacity of 320,000 metric tonnes is ongoing.
