Disney's sci-fi adventure movie Tomorrowland is directed by two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles), and is inspired by a section in the Disneyland theme park that was opened in 1955, commemorating a time when Americans imagined an optimistic future.
Idealistic and ingenious 11-year-old Frank Walker (played by Thomas Robinson) leaves home to compete at the 1964 World's Fair in New York with his jet-pack invention, but fails to impress pragmatic scientist David Nix (Laurie). Frank later meets Athena (Raffey Cassidy), a mysterious young girl who hands him a pin that leads him to the incredible, futuristic Tomorrowland.
The movie then shifts to the present day, where a bright, optimistic high school girl named Casey Newton (Robertson) harbours dreams of being an astronaut, but with Cape Canaveral shutting down, she sees her dream slipping away.
This is where the movie starts to get interesting. Casey finds a mysterious badge which transmits her to an unknown field as she holds it. Realising that there is something mysterious out there, she decides to go on an adventure to find what the badge is all about.
Along the way, she encounters the still childlike Athena, as well as Frank (Clooney), now a middle-aged, jaded recluse in an isolated house. At first, Frank refuses to follow Casey, but soon realises that she shares the same optimistic character he once had, and they both go on a mission to save Tomorrowland, and the future of the world.
What most impressed me about the movie is the CGI and animated graphics. It makes you feel as if the place really exists. If you appreciate a movie that is packed with CGI, Tomorrowland should be at the top of your list.
