DBKL to reduce parking spaces in the city

KUALA LUMPUR: In a move to encourage the use of public transport, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is proposing to reduce the number of parking space in the city.
"We also hope that by doing this we can inculcate a pedestrian culture among city residents," Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib told reporters after launching the Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival "Diversecity 2015" today.
Ahmad Phesal, however, did not elaborate on the areas affected or provide figures of the proposed reduction in parking spaces.
"We hope this move will help higher ridership in public transport, especially with the expected completion of the mass rapid transit (MRT) in 2016," he added.
He pointed out that car ownership among city residents is too high, thus leading to regular traffic jams.
Speaking on another issue, Ahmad Phesal encouraged illegal street vendors to use food trucks, like caravans, to do their cooking in the moving truck.
In this respect, he said DBKL had identified a place in Bukit Bintang where a total of 700 to 800 street vendors can operate their stalls legally with their food trucks.

Ahmad Phesal added that placing these vendors in a common location will help maintain hygienic practices among them.
Also present at the launch of "Diversecity 2015" was festival director Sunita Rajakumari.
