AS Tottenham Hotspur take on the Malaysia XI today, all eyes will be on new-found sensation Harry Kane, who made 51 appearances for the Premier League club – scoring 31 goals during his breakthrough season.
Tottenham arrived In Kuala Lumpur yesterday for the AIA Cup with a star-studded line-up that includes Kane, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, midfielders Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen, to name a few. This is their first visit to Malaysia since 1979, and will present an opportunity for the club to further engage with its well-established fanbase in the region.
Kane's goals helped Spurs finish fifth on the final day of the season, securing a Europa League spot for the north London club.
"It was very important to secure the Europa League spot," said Kane in an interview with theSun yesterday.
"We knew coming into the last game of the season Liverpool had a tough game away to Stoke City, and it was a great chance for us to secure the fifth spot.
"We are very happy we don't have to go to the Europa League qualifiers and go straight into the group stage," added Kane, who believes that his confidence is a major factor for his goalscoring form.
"We have a very young side and we can use this season as a building block for next season and do better.
"The team has been playing really well and everything else fell into place at the right time."
Kane, who has been linked with a move to several clubs, however refused to comment on the saga between Raheem Sterling and Liverpool FC, stating he is happy at Tottenham.
Kane's teammate, Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen, believes playing Malaysia today isn't a "circus game" as many call it.
"Doesn't matter who you play, you play to win. But of course with the heat (in Malaysia) it is going to be a tough game for us"
Malaysia coach Dollah Salleh named five foreign players plying their trade in the Malaysian Super League to face Tottenham today.
They are Ali Ashfaq (PDRM), Paulo Rangel (Terengganu), Robert Cornthwaite and Guilherme De Paula (Selangor), and Brazilian defender Thiago Junior Aquino (Perak).
Tottenham's match against Malaysia XI at the Shah Alam Stadium will kickoff at 8.45pm. Tickets will be on sale at the stadium today from 11am until halftime at the box office, and the gates will open at 6pm.
