Ahmad Zahid: Taman Medan church cross protesters not investigated for sedition (Updated)

KUALA LUMPUR: Participants of the Taman Medan cross protest were not investigated under the Sedition Act as the case is treated as attempted trespassing based on the police report lodged.
In a written reply to Gobind Singh Deo's (DAP-Puchong) question in Parliament, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (BN-Bagan Datuk) said it is the police's discretion to categorise the report for investigations purposes.
"The statement by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) (that the protest was not seditious) is based on the police report made, which was classified as attempted trespassing and not as an offence under the Sedition Act," Ahmad Zahid said.
Gobind asked the Minister if any action will be taken against IGP Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar for saying the protest was not seditious, for updates regarding the investigation, and if Khalid had consulted the Attorney General before making the statement.
Ahmad Zahid said the incident is being investigated under the Penal Code for attempted trespassing and the papers will be finalised and submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC).
He added that it is up to the AGC to consider the recommendations by the police and to take any further action.
About 40 people protested outside a church in Taman Medan in mid-April and demanded that the cross displayed on the building's facade be taken down as it challenged the faith of majority Muslims living in the area.
Among those involved in the protest was the IGP's brother Datuk Abdullah Abu Bakar, which led to allegations of bias when Khalid immediately commented that the protesters did not commit any seditious offences after the incident.
However, the parliamentary answer also seem to contradict Ahmad Zahid's earlier statement that the protesters will be investigated under the Sedition Act.
