GUATEMALA CITY: A 47-year-old woman was beaten to death and her body torched by an angry mob who accused her of practicing witchcraft.
The woman was killed late Wednesday in San Luis, in the Tacanas region near the border with Mexico, an emergency responder told local media.
The woman was identified as Catarina Gonzalez Perez.
Villagers accused her of being a witch, and bludgeoned her before setting her ablaze.
Public mob killings are common in some Guatemalan villages, among locals who say they do not trust authorities to deliver justice.
In 2013, 52 people were killed by angry mobs, compared to 23 cases in 2012, according to Guatemala's Department for Human Rights. – AFP
