MEXICO CITY: Andres, a large storm far off the coast of Mexico, strengthened Friday to a Category One hurricane – the first of the Pacific season, weather officials said.
Andres has maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers (75 miles) per hour.
Officials with Mexico's National Meteorological Service said the storm, for now, poses no risk to land.
Late Friday, the storm was located 780 kilometers (about 500 miles) southwest of Socorro Island, which is part of the Revillagigedo Archipelago off the tip of Baja California.
The Pacific hurricane season, which began on May 15, lasts through November. – AFP
