IPOH: A logging company operator was remanded for four days from today to assist in the investigation into a RM500,000 bribe given to a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) senior officer as inducement to not continue the probe into the company's illegal logging activities.
Magistrate Rahimah Rahim allowed the 36-year-old man to be remanded for further investigation under the MACC Act 2009.
A MACC spokesman said the agency arrested the man at a fast food restaurant in Meru, here, at 11.30am on Tuesday.
He was suspected of bribing the officer so as not to continue with the investigation into his company's logging activities outside the licensed area in the Temenggor Forest Reserve, Grik.
"The operation was conducted by the MACC and Forestry Department. The man offered a bribe of RM1 million for discontinuing the investigation and detection of logging activities outside the permitted area.
"The man had paid a bribe of RM500,000 to the MACC officer involved on April 7," the spokesman said. – Bernama
