KUALA LUMPUR: What was supposed to be a dialogue session between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and NGOs took an unexpected twist when former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad took to the stage to address the crowd at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here today.
The dialogue session, themed Nothing2Hide, was organised by a group of lawyers - SukaGuam, with the objective of giving the public the opportunity to ask Najib questions on any issue in the country.
Before 9am, some 2,000 people had arrived at the hall but Najib was nowhere to be seen. Mahathir arrived at PWTC at about 8.45am.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar called for the event to be cancelled in the name of public safety and community harmony.
At about 10am, the emcee announced that the dialogue session with Najib was cancelled, which led the crowd to jeer at the secretariat.
However, when the emcee announced that it would be a dialogue session with Mahathir instead, the crowd started to applaud.
Mahathir then entered the hall, and was greeted with cheers of "hidup Tun".
The former premier then took to the stage and began his speech by criticising Najib and his policies, claiming that it did not benefit the people.
Mahathir said that as he is no longer in office, he had to speak out against Najib as he does not want to see billions of ringgit being wasted.
However, halfway through his speech, Mahathir was approached by four police officers who requested him to stop.
Mahathir at first appeared taken aback but quickly regained his composure, the crowd however began to jeer, directing their taunts at the presence of the police officers on stage.
At this point Mahathir had returned to his seat. A few minutes later the organisers announced that there would be a press conference with the former premier on the stage.
Mahathir then proceeded with the press conference, surrounded by a huge crowd of reporters.
After the conclusion of the press conference, he left the hall sometime before 11am.
