Funds for quake victims launched

    RANAU: Several bodies have started to raise funds in aid of victims affected by the earthquake which struck Ranau and other areas in Sabah Friday.
    Sabah Ministry of Community Development and Consumer Affairs today launched the Mount Kinabalu Disaster Relief Fund : Sabah Community Services Council (MPMS) to raise funds especially for the mountain guides and porters affected.
    Its minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid said its officers would meet with Sabah Parks management to gather information on all those involved to facilitate the disbursement of funds.
    "We are concerned and sympathise with their predicament and will help to channel aid as soon as possible," she told reporters after launching the fund at the Kinabalu Park operations centre, here today.

    Meanwhile, Mount Kinabalu Guide Association chairman, Richard Soibi said, some 250 mountain guides and porters registered under the association have voiced concerns over their source of income with the halt of climbing activities announced yesterday.
    "With the mountaineering activities stopped temporarily it will affect our livelihood, as this is our source of income," he told Bernama here today.
    Donations may be channeled to CIMB account 8005609923 (Persatuan Malim Gunung Kinabalu).
    Meanwhile, Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) Wanita Movement initiated 'Earthquake Disaster Fund: Sabah Wanita BN to help injured victims and families of those who died in the earthquake.
