LANGKAWI: Asean must implement a standard operating procedure (SOP) to mitigate climate change, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim.

"Our concerted effort to mitigate and adapt to climate change is a long journey involving many stakeholders such as the federal and state governments, NGOs, charity foundations, social entrepreneurs and grassroots.

"A common problem of efficiency and sustainability is the lack of a proper and effective regulatory body to formulate a comprehensive policy and framework," she said.

In this regard, she said climate change issues must be addressed holistically, where socio-political goals and economic goals are balanced to achieve efficiency and sustainability in the efforts.

Rohani said this while opening the Asean Regional Workshop On Gender Issues On Climate Change And Its Adaptation, here, last night.

On the workshop, she said it was one of the Asean Committee on Women's priorities in its five-year (2011-2015) plan. – Bernama
