PETALING JAYA: A Malaysia Airlines aircraft bound for Kuala Lumpur made an emergency turnback to Melbourne Airport two hours ago.
In a statement issued today, MAS said that Flight MH148 with 300 passengers onboard was inspected by the airlines' engineers and ground personnel.
"Preliminary inspections revealed no physical evidence of an external fire and further assessment is underway.
"Safety is of the utmost importance to Malaysia Airlines," it added, noting that more information will be released when available.
Earlier, live air traffic website FlightRadar24 posted on twitter that a fire broke out in the airplane's starboard engine.
"#MH148 landed safely after fire in starboard engine, per Melbourne FD. Fire out, all safe," it tweeted.
