GEORGE TOWN: National Laureate Datuk A. Samad Said joining the DAP is a sign for all to leave the politics of race and hate, according to Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (pix).

The DAP secretary-general said Samad's move was a signal to intellectuals and the public to have a firm stand in a time of leadership crisis.

He said Samad was determined to forge a path for "Middle Malaysia" based on moderation, progressive values and democracy.

"His brave act is very much appreciated in this moment when Malaysia and DAP are attacked by racial and religious sentiments," he said in a statement today.

The 80-year-old, fondly known as Pak Samad, created waves when he officially joined the DAP on Saturday.

He received his membership card from DAP veteran and Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang in Gua Musang, Kelantan.

Samad received the National Laureate award in 1985 in recognition of his local and regional literary achievements.

His stock has also risen after being seen taking part in various pro-democracy and reform rallies and demonstrations.
