GEORGE TOWN: A door to Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow's service centre was damaged after a man set it on fire at about 3am today.

The close circuit television (CCTV) recording, made available to the media, showed a man in a cap placing a piece of cloth at the service centre's door, setting fire to the material and fleeing the scene at Jalan Kedah here.

Chow, who is also Local Government Committee chairman, said the fire died down within 15 minutes.

He described the act as attempted arson and strongly believed it to be related to the Penang Island City Council's attempt to take down an Umno logo at Menara Umno on Jalan Macalister here on Friday.

He said his service centre was not the first to be targeted as black paint was thrown at Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng's service centre and the Penang DAP headquarters on Saturday.

He hoped these acts would stop and defended the enforcement actions of the Council.

"The law is the law, their job is to ensure the rules and regulations are complied with," he said in a press conference at the scene.

A police report has been lodged..

Penang Umno chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman had critcised the Council after the failed 4pm attempt to remove the logo.

Bernama reports him as saying the party planned to submit the relevant documents for the permit this Monday and expressed his regret over the move to remove the logo.

Zainal said the action went against the Streets, Drainage and Building Act 1974 and stressed Penang Umno would make sure the logo remained.

When contacted, City Council councilor Ong Ah Teong said a press conference will be called tomorrow to address the issue.
