TUMPAT: Pengkalan Kubor Marine Police crippled an attempt to smuggle in various types of 'tudung' worth RM306,000 at an illegal jetty in Tualang, here on Saturday.

Pengkalan Kubor Region 3 marine police commanding officer ASP Mohd Nawi Mohd Yunus said during the 5.50pm incident, a team patrolling the area spotted a group of men unloading goods at the illegal jetty.

"When the team launched the raid, the suspects managed to escape in a speed boat in the direction of Thailand. They left behind 34 packages containing 10,200 'tudung' that the suspects had attempted to smuggle into the country," he told reporters at the Pengkalan Kubor base, here today.
"Being the month of Ramadan, the demand for 'tudung' is high and meant for the Kelantan market. 'Tudung' are sold at about RM30 each," he said.

Mohd Nawi said patrolling and surveillance would be increased along the Malaysia-Thailand border to cripple smuggling activities.

"Members of the public with information about smuggling activities must also help us," he said. – Bernama
