TO HELP promote the country’s tourism industry, Tourism Malaysia appointed nine personalities as tourism advisors.
During the certificate of appointment ceremony held at Carcosa Seri Negara, Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said the Tourism Advisor Programme was an initiative by his ministry through Tourism Malaysia. The initiative will engage prominent, well-established and influential Malaysians in various fields, either living abroad or in Malaysia, to promote the country among their circle of friends, fans and network of contacts.
“You can spend millions in advertising and promotions for your business but negative word-of-mouth will eventually bring you down. This is one of the reasons we introduced the Tourism Ambassador Programme back in 2009. Last year, we rebranded it as the Tourism Advisor Programme,” Nazri informed.
The band of tourism advisors include:
1) entrepreneur Tan Sri Syed Mohd Yusof Syed Nasir;
2) shoe icon Prof Datuk Dr Jimmy Choo;
3) Swiss-based honorary consul Datuk Jeffery Sandragesan;
4) famous singer Datuk Sheikh Abdullah Ahmad (Datuk Shake);
5) Malaysian songstress Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin;
6) celebrity chef Datuk Chef Ismail Ahmad;
7) diving ambassador and conservationist Clement Lee;
8) Korean businessman and tourism industry expert Datuk Lee Jin Bok; and
9) singer and songwriter Yunalis Mat Zara’ai (Yuna).
The programme corresponds with the government’s objective to drive Malaysia’s tourism industry towards achieving its target of 36 million tourist arrivals and RM168 billion in receipts by 2020, as outlined in the Malaysia Tourism Transformation Plan (MTTP).
