KUALA LUMPUR: A footage of an alleged drunk college student who crashed his speeding car into the rear of a police vehicle before fleeing the scene at Jalan Pudu went viral yesterday.
The footage captured by a videocam mounted on a trailing vehicle of an unknown motorist showed the reckless manner the 21-year-old youth bulldozed the police patrol car aside with his Volkswagen Polo before speeding off.
Police said the hit-and-run case occurred at 8.55am on Monday where two policemen were travelling in a patrol car on the left lane of Jalan Pudu past an underpass tunnel.
After overtaking several cars from the left lane, the driver of the speeding Volkswagen had failed to slow down in time as he approached the police patrol car and ended up crashing into it.
The impact of the crash sent the police vehicle spinning before coming to a stop next to a concrete barricade in the middle of the road.
The police car was badly damaged but both policemen escaped injury. The student suffered minor injuries.
Kuala Lumpur traffic police chief ACP Mohd Nadzri Hussain said police managed to trace the Volkswagen driver and ordered him to report to police soon after the accident.
He said investigations showed that the youth was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
He said the student was detained and freed on bail hours later.
"We are wrapping up investigations and expect to charge him for reckless driving when the order comes from the Attorney-General Chambers." he said.
