KUALA LUMPUR: Members of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) 2009 Central Working Committee (CWC) lodged a police report today against embattled party president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel (pix) for "abusing his power".
The report was lodged by 2009 CWC members Datuk V. S. Mogan, M. Mathuraiveran and national Wanita MIC chief Mohana Muniandy against Palanivel for calling a CWC on Monday although his membership in the party had been disqualified by the Registrar of Societies (RoS).
Mogan said Palanivel had defied court orders and went on with his "illegal" meeting.
He also questioned some of the resolutions passed by Palanivel at the meeting, one of which states that the MIC headquarters be regained from the "unlawful occupiers immediately" and that they "would take all steps necessary to secure possession of MIC headquarters immediately".
Palanivel was referring to Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam and his team, who seemed to be operating from the building.
"That was a clear threat to take back MIC headquarters. It is clearly stated in the RoS letter that Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam has the highest power in MIC at the moment," he said.
Mohana agreed with Mogan, saying that Palanivel does not have any authority to make a decision on the dates of the elections.
Palanivel had earlier said nominations for the branch elections would be held on July 15 and 16, and the voting from July 24 to 26.
"We just want this to end, this has been dragging on for 18 months now and we need to move on for the party's good," she said.
It was reported on Monday that Palanivel would seek a meeting with RoS director-general Datuk Mohammad Razin Abdullah to discuss his membership in the party.
But Mohammad Razin today said that the RoS will stick by its letter dated June 25 that acknowledges the 2009 CWC and gives Subramaniam power as the acting president of the party.
