PETALING JAYA: Bank Negara and AmIslamic Bank should issue clear statements on the Wall Street Journal's report that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak had alleged embezzled US$700 million of funds from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), an UMNO MP said today.
Kepala Batas MP Reezal Merican Naina Merican said even though Najib, 1MDB, and other implicated companies had issued timely denials, the banks had not responded to the matter yet.
"There has been no clear statements from Bank Negara and AmIslamic Bank, and this confuses the people. To me, this is a vacuum that needs to be filled in any denials or clarification," Reezal Merican said in a statement.
He said the formation of a special task force comprising of Bank Negara, the Police, and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate the matter is the right move as all other allegations against Najib will be dispelled should his name be cleared.
Reezal Merican said it does not matter from whom did the attacks by international media and blogs come, but what matters the most is to clear Najib of all charges so his dignity can be restored.
He added that the accusations will affect public and party support and should be addressed immediately.
