GEORGE TOWN: A Penang Umno senator has urged women to be more financially independent by participating in home based businesses.
Senator and state party Wanita chief Datuk Norliza Abd Rahim said women should not be so dependent on their husbands for household expenses and should contribute to the family expenses.
She said there were business opportunities and cited the frozen food industry and online businesses as examples for women to enter.
"I feel these are the sectors women can be engaged in without neglecting their family duties," she said when asked about dealing with cost of living increases in a press conference today.
Norliza had earlier led some 200 orphans and children with single parents on a shopping spree at Queensbay Mall here to prepare for the Hari Raya celebrations.
She said each child was given RM200 to spend and could get whatever they wanted, not just limited to clothes.
"This is to show that we care for those who are not so fortunate," she said adding the funds came from the Umno Bukit Gelugor division as well as from private contributions.
Shopping for clothes were sisters Shahirah Lajim, 6, and Shami Lajim, 4, who said they were happy to be able to get new clothes for Hari Raya.
Along with them were twins Nor Nadhirah Shamsuhaimi and Nur Nabilah Shamsuhaimi, both 14, who said this was the first chance they had so far to prepare for Hari Raya.
"We are thankful for this trip here," the students of SMK George Town said.
