KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Resort members have surpassed their targeted collection of RM200,000 to assist victims of the Nepal earthquake disaster in April this year.
Last Friday night, the group managed to collect a total of RM225,000 in cash through its Nepal Fund Raising Dinner held at the clubhouse here in Bukit Jalil.
Initially, the funds collected were short of the target at about RM175,000. But a last-minute call for charity at the dinner saw people at the dinner coming forward to give cash and pledges, and the figure passed its target within the last hour of the dinner.
While most of the donations came from the sale of tables at the dinner and sale of merchandise prior to the dinner, other sources were the auction of items, including watches, golf drivers, bird’s nest and travel bags.
Those present were entertained by local celebrity and radio deejay Patrick Teoh, who emceed at the dinner. They were also mesmerised by several ballads from musician Kenny Tay of the 80s music group Kenny, Remy and Martin.
Fund raising dinner chairman Nelson Low said the idea to have the dinner came about after he and other club members heard about the magnitude 7.8 earthquake, that killed over 8,000 people and injured thousands more.
“We decided that something had to be done, and we planned this fund raising dinner within a month and a half,” he told theSun.
Low added that the committee was happy the dinner managed to raise funds exceeding its target.
The funds collected will be channeled to the Thrangu Dharma Society Petaling Jaya, which will be used to purchase food, medicine and clothes for the victims of the calamity in central Nepal.
Also present at the mock cheque presentation at the dinner were Berjaya Clubs director Khor Poh Hwa and Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Club chairman Danny Chong, who presented the cheque to Thrangu Dharma Society Petaling adviser Lama Lotro.
Guests at the dinner were also given a chance to win lucky draw prizes, which included hotel vouchers to stay in Berjaya George Town Hotel in Penang, Berjaya Tioman Resort in Johor and Berjaya Hills Resort in Bukit Tinggi, Pahang.
