Gerakan: Calls by opposition for Najib to go on leave politically motivated

IPOH: Gerakan described the call by opposition MPs and NGOs for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak to go on a leave of absence during investigations into alleged fund transfers into his personal accounts as politically motivated.
"The call has no legal basis, investigations are ongoing, as of now, it is all unsubstantiated allegations, there is no confirmation of any wrong doing," said its adviser Tan Sri Chang Ko Youn.
Chang was commenting on The Wall Street Journal report allegedly implicating Najib in the embezzlement of US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) from debt-laden 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
On the call by DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI), he said the opposition has the habit of calling for an inquiry for the smallest of issues.
He also expressed surprise on the call by activist Datuk S Ambiga to hold snap elections in view of the current situation.
She had also asked Barisan Nasional to hand over powers to a caretaker administration since the alleged corrupt practices may involve leaders of Najib's administration.
Chang said Ambiga's comments appear to have been made out of ignorance on how the system of Parliamentary democracy operates, saying the prime minister was elected based on the majority support he commands among MPs.
"It will be a different scenario if the ruling party wants to dissolve Parliament," he added.
Lim and Ambiga's comments were made at a gathering of more than 120 opposition MPs and NGOs at the Parliament compound on Tuesday, where they called on Najib to take a leave of absence.
