Ruckus erupts between thugs and salespeople in Low Yat [Video]

PETALING JAYA: A ruckus erupted between thugs and salespeople in a telecommunications shop at Low Yat Plaza here on Saturday after a group of youth returned to take revenge against the retailers who caught them shoplifting earlier.
A video clip of the incident has since gone viral on social media.
In the 7.50pm incident, several workers of the shop were beaten up by the group.
CID chief SAC Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad said police arrested a 22-year-old who was believed to be one of the thugs. Police are looking for the rest of the gang.
He said today that the fracas was purely an act of revenge by a group of youths unhappy that one of their friends was caught for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.
“The man was caught by the plaza’s security guard, who then handed him to police. There was nothing racial about the incident,” said Zainuddin.
The thugs entered the shop at 7.50pm and began smashing the glass display, flipping over cabinets and smashing phones and other electronic products.
At least 50 protesters were still at the scene at 12.49am in the ruckus that is learnt to have gone on until 5am this morning.
theSun learnt that a local Chinese press reporter and cameraman had been assaulted by a group of thugs.
The reporter had been trying to shield the cameraman from getting beaten up by the protesters but instead got assaulted himself.
They were sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) for treatment.
A total of five people were beaten up. It is learnt that two newsmen and three bystanders were assaulted as well.
Police were forced to fire few warning gunshots to keep the commotion from escalating.
It was learnt that though no gunshots had been fired by the group of thugs, firecrackers were used.
Damage is estimated at around RM70,000 and the case is being investigated under the Penal Code for rioting and causing damage.
