KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 74 people were killed in road accidents during the first three days of Ops Selamat 7, with motorcyclists and pillion riders topping the list, with 48 deaths.
Federal traffic police chief SAC Datuk Mohd Fuad Abdul Latiff said today there were 4,184 accidents reported and police issued 34,554 summonses to errant motorists in the past three days.
"I am not happy in announcing the statistics especially involving total summonses ... the stats is enough to demonstrate our motorists attitudes," Fuad told reporters at a press conference today at the Bukit Aman police headquarters.
Mohd Fuad said most of the fatal accidents occurred on Federal roads.
"We are facing a very bad start as the statistics so far are way higher than our target," he added.
According to him, the federal traffic police department had also identified 60 hotspots in which 53 are in federal roads.
"A total of 33 traffic policemen will be deployed by Wednesday to monitor all the hotspots, especially Slim River, Simpang Pulai, Gurun, Tanjung Malim and the KL-Seremban highway," said Fuad.
The "Ops Selamat" road safety campaign was launched by Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar on July 10-24.
Meanwhile, a total 3,558 traffic offenders were arrested for failing to settle their warrants under "Ops Warta" which was launched on May 18.
Fuad said the offenders were picked up at their workplace and during roadblocks conducted during the operation.
Mohd Fuad added that 18,759 people voluntarily turned up at police stations with their warrants since the crackdown was launched.
