GUA MUSANG: Operation of the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) train service in the east coast is expected to be fully operational in February next year with the completion of the railway bridge in Kemubu.

KTMB president Lieutenant Colonel (Rtd) Sarbini Tijan said construction of the 250m-long bridge across the Nenggiri River was expected to cost RM30 million.

"We are now in the process of appointing the contractor for the project, he told reporters after arriving on the first train from Johor Baru Sentral at the Gua Musang KTMB transit station.

The train ride by Sarbini and 50 other passengers was the first since the suspension of the train service due to the floods in December last year.

"I see the passengers are happy and excited. We are scheduled to arrive at 9am, but was delayed by about an hour because we have to be careful and the train had to sound the horn often along the way to avoid the public from crossing the railway tracks as a short cut," he added.
He said various efforts were made by KTMB to redevelop the rail infrastructure in the east coast.

From the Gua Musang station, passengers were sent to their respective destinations by bus.

One of the passengers, Siti Rohani Hassan, 46, said she was happy that the train service was back in operation.

She and her three children boarded the train in Kluang, Johor, to return to her hometown in Gua Musang for the Aidilfitri celebration. – Bernama
