PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association chief Mohd Ali Baharom, 43, also known as Ali Tinju, was arrested under the Sedition Act today in connection with allegations of inciting the Low Yat brawl in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday night.
Kuala Lumpur CID chief SAC Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad confirmed his arrest to theSun.
"We will request a remand order tomorrow in Dang Wangi police headquarters at 11am," said Zainuddin.
Mohd Ali was seen in a video clip allegedly making a speech outside Low Yat Plaza on Sunday night before the situation turned ugly. He was detained at the Dang Wangi police station at 11.30am today where he had been summoned to give a statement.
He has been detained under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act.
Ali was earlier named by the police at a press conference today as one of those to be arrested over brawls outside Low Yat on Sunday night, following the theft of a handphone by a youth the day before.
The mob that gathered there had gone "to seek revenge" for the youth's arrest before the incident turned racial.
Ali is also known for leading a group of armed forces veterans in doing "butt exercises" outside the house of then Bersih 2.0 co-chair Datuk S. Ambiga in 2012.
Zainuddin added an auxiliary policeman was also detained to assist investigations into the Low Yat brawl.
The 22-year-old man was picked up by police at a Felda building in Jalan Persiaran KLCC at about 1am today.
"He will be investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting," Zainuddin said, adding the man is a constable in the auxiliary police.
He will be remanded for three days until Thursday.
Meanwhile, according to a source, investigators have acquired more than a dozen video clips of the protesters from closed-circuit security cameras and have sent the footage to the police forensics department to identify those involved in the demonstration.
It is learnt that still images of protestors wanted for the ruckus will be released to the media by the end of next week.
