IGP slams defence lawyer for accusing him of making false statements

GOMBAK: Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar slammed the defence lawyer of the suspects in the alleged Low Yat Plaza phone theft for accusing him of making false statements against the suspects.
Khalid told a press conference today, that the lawyer, identified as Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz had bad intentions over his statements.
"That's the problem. Those who arrested will say anything they want to get off the hook. They can just say anything.
"And this lawyer has other intentions... bad intention," said Khalid before distributing Hari Raya goodies to the public who going back to hometown at Gombak toll plaza today.
Khalid added that if Mohd Khairul is a smart lawyer, he would not do such thing or claims.
"A wise lawyer will not make that kind of statement.
"I invite all the media to come to the police stations and interview those arrested. They will definitely say the police are wrong and they are right. That's all of my comment on the issue," said Khalid.
Mohd Khairul on Tuesday said in a statement that Khalid had falsely claimed his clients were at the mobile outlet in the plaza but only one of them (suspects) actually went up to the to floor while the other waited below.
He added that his other client, 22-year-old Khairul Azmi, whom the IGP said was mistakenly released and later be fabricated a story about fake phones sold by the retailer, had never said such a thing.
"There was never any issue about cloned mobile phones. This is an untrue statement by the IGP which prejudiced my client," said Mohd Khairul in a statement.
He also said that police should be professional or the public will lose trust in them.
Shahrul Anuar Abdul Aziz, 22, was charged at a magistrate's court on Tuesday with stealing a Lenovo handphone worth RM800 from an outlet at the mall.
He was charged with stealing a black S860 Lenovo belonging to Techasia Boutique at Lot UG K021 UG floor at about 4.47pm on Saturday under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum 10 years' jail and fine upon conviction.
To date, police have arrested 26 people in connection with the Low Yat Plaza melee on late Sunday.
