PUTRAJAYA: The multiracial crowd that thronged the Prime Minister's residence today for his Aidilfitri open house is prove that Malaysians live harmoniously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak (pix) told the media today.
He said the recent events that happened in Low Yat were shocking and serve as a reminder to Malaysians to appreciate the harmony amongst the races that we have enjoyed thus far.
"People should not get carried away and act driven by emotions. Please do not believe unverified news," he said.
Former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who was present for Najib's open house, said he hoped Malaysians would remain united and cease fighting one another.
"Today, Hari Raya is a good day to bring people together," he said briefly to the media.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Datuk Seri LiowTiong Lai called for Malaysians to reflect on unity during this Hari Raya season.
"We should look back at the Low Yat incident and not fall into racial discord. We should also ensure that racism does not spread and destroy the seed of unity in this country which was based on mutual respect. The mixed races, cultures and languages reflect that," he said.
He said the incident was also used by certain irresponsible quarters to create further tension on social media.
"People should be careful in trusting anything on social media as a lot of the messages disseminated there are half truths, twisted and unverified," Liow added.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam observed the huge turnout as clearly proving that the people still believe in the government.
"Despite all issues, the attendance of the public today clearly shows that Malaysians still trust in the current government. We hope that this culture of understanding and respecting one another continues so that we can continue to live in unity," he said.
While Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Chua Tee Yong said though this year has been a challenging year, Malaysians have to continue to strengthen the unity among the races in Malaysia to prosper
"On this Ramadhan, we should help one another and not be too sensitive. We have to remember if we want our country to prosper, we have to have a strong foundation.
"We hope all Malaysians can play their role in developing the interracial bond that has been cultivated since Malaysia achieved its independence."
