Low Yat Plaza: The reality is on the ground

KUALA LUMPUR: Mohd Salehuddin Sulaiman, Nurul Nadia Salleh and Mohd Ibrahim Yahya feel safe at Low Yat Plaza despite social media allegations of a racial clash there last weekend.
These three people were at the plaza, popular for mobile telephones, computers and computer software, on the second day of Aidilfitri yesterday, pondering what mobile telephone to buy with their "duit raya".
Mohd Ibrahim even brought his wife and son along as well.
These three people were among the many other Malays, most of them youths, who had come to spend the second day of Aidilfitri on a shopping spree at the plaza.
A brawl that erupted at the plaza last Saturday after a 22-year-old youth who allegedly stole a mobile telephone was caught by the employees of an outlet led to irresponsible people circulating news on the social media of a racial clash there.
Mohd Salehuddin, 23, said the IT "warehouse" is the only place which offers IT products at reasonable prices.
"I came here today looking for a new (mobile) telephone to buy with my duit ray ... it is expensive at other places," he said.
Nurul Nadia Salleh, 21, a university student, said she opts to come to Low Yat Plaza every time she wants to buy an IT product.
"I know what happened here recently but that does not stop me from making my purchases here.
"This year, I received more cash as duit raya. I am able to buy a new telephone. This is my Raya gift," said Nurul Nadia excitedly.
Like IT engineer Mohd Ibrahim, 38, others too came with their families in tow.
Mohd Ibrahim said not everything circulated about the authenticity of products and safety at Low Yat Plaza was true.
"I have bought many products here. Today, I have come to buy a laptop computer for my son who will be attending university in September," said Mohd Ibrahim, who brought along his wife and son.
Although the plaza was not as crowded as before, the Aidilfitri spirit was there, with decorative lamps and ketupat inside and outside the plaza. – Bernama
