GEORGE TOWN: Human rights group Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) has challenged people to live on RM6 a day for five days and to document the effort to better understand what living poor feels like.
Spokesman Lee Chung Lun said the challenge was to deepen a person's understanding of going hungry and to stretch every Ringgit.
Those who join the "Can you survive on RM6 per day" contest can use public transport and have to minimise leisure and entertainment activities to make every cent count, he added.
He said the challenge begins on July 30 and will end on Aug 3 while participants should be aged 18 and above.
There will be three awards, Most Saving Award, Best Involvement Award and Most Popular Award with a RM300 prize for the first two awards and RM100 prize for the third award.
"Participants will have to submit a record of their daily expenses and experience by Aug 8," he told a press conference today.
The challenge is in conjunction with the group's Local Democracy Festival.
