Pak Samad explains why he believes in DAP

ELLY FAZANIZA speaks to Datuk A. Samad Said, the 83-year-old national laureate fondly known as Pak Samad, about his decision to join DAP, his sentiments about the party and the criticism he faced over the move.
theSun: What do you hope to accomplish by becoming a DAP member?
Samad: I only want to give my service in terms of my ability and experience. It has not been determined yet what role I will play in the party.
Why did you decide to join DAP?
I believe that DAP is a political party which is well organised (and) has aspirations and dreams for a better Malaysia. I go for that. DAP also has proven that it is fighting (for the people's cause) aggressively. It is uncommon to hear disagreements within DAP. We can also observe that their members, which are being led by Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng, are educated, well-mannered and are very much into their cause. I feel that they have high ambitions for a better Malaysia.
That is why I feel that this party should be supported.
What was the reaction of your family and peers to your decision?
Actually, my family did not know that I wanted to join DAP but they were not surprised by my decision and they have continued to support me. It is only among my colleagues, including some activists, that I have been questioned in my choice of DAP. This might be because there are other political parties which I could have joined that they think are more suitable for me. Some came forward and asked me to reconsider. I said I have made my decision.
DAP is re-branding itself by recruiting more Malays and now with your involvement, some quarters speculate that it is a "victory" for their re-branding. How do you perceive this sentiment?
I feel comfortable with the party. It was not an abrupt decision on my part. The party is not biased in terms of race but they are for a better Malaysia. Perhaps this dream would not be reached in the near future, but at least we have created a platform for our grandchildren to have a united vision of becoming one.
How long did it take for you to decide to join DAP?
I believe it took me about two years.
Has there been a discussion for you to be part of the central working committee?
That, I do not know.
There is the perception that DAP is still a chauvinist and an anti-Malay party. What are your comments on this?
Of course, those who oppose it would say so. But to me, it is the party which has opened its doors for others to join them. The Malays are quite shy to join, especially when there are allegations that DAP is a Chinese-based party.
Some quarters, including scholars and members of the public, say you have "sold out". How do you respond to this?
They can and have the right to say that because at the end of the day, they will either like or dislike (the decision I have made). Some see it as as a political move. Let history be the judge of my actions.
How do you keep yourself healthy with your heavy schedules?
Alhamdulillah, I am still healthy. I take care in terms of the food that I eat and (getting enough) rest.
